This history begins in a great city, like anyother great city in the world. Of course, that means a place with a greatamount of houses, streets, vehicles, people and, naturally, of problems andsubjects to solve. Although usually we think that in this great city things happenthat do not happen in any other place of the world, we have decided to admitthat we can be mistaken in two ways: on the one hand, the same outlandishsituations and same problems can appear in other cities, but we did not findout them, in spite of the global systems of information. By the other, thosecities also must right to have their own problems and outlandish aspects, andthat these are unique in the world. With time we hoped to discover towardswhere the truth inclines.
Certainly, the great cities are not all equal,since its development has been subject to historical, economic, political,cultural and environmental factors, to mention some. And that, of course, isoutside our control. We are only little drops of water in that sea of peopleand events that the cities are. And as well as those drops remain unitedforming a great ocean, thus also we (the human beings) would have to be united inthe same form in those great centers of grouping and coexistence that thecities are. In these places, men and women have learned to control theirinstincts, to cover their necessities in collective form, and to create normsthat assure certain rate of well-being, allowing them to coexist without hurtthemselves. Every time we advanced in all these aspects, we arrived at an upperlevel of civilization. The problem is that not always we advanced: not in allthe cities and not at the same rhythm in comparison with other cities.
And this great city of our histories is not theexception. In order to give you an idea about it, we will say this is abeautiful place in the middle of mountains -we will not say where, by now-, wheremillions of people live and survive. Some of them are native, others have comefrom different places of the country to seek fortune (for reasons that are notrelevant to mention) and few arrived from other parts of the world and theyfell in love with this city, when they discovered more than catalogues, guidesor Hollywood films said. All we have the enormous challenge to construct a cityin which all we can live in the best possible conditions, that means "in acivilized place". A huge challenge, if we consider how much is necessary to getit. Absence of solidarity, tolerance, respect to the coexistence norms; inaddition to administrative errors, corruption, lack of civil and politicalresponsibility from those who take the most important decisions of the city,are only some of the most urgent things to take care of. We hoped that these notesoffer you ideas to reflect on the present problems of a great city, and topromote the search of authentic solutions. Seems tough?
